If you’ve been experiencing acid reflux, indigestion, gas, bloating or heart burn after eating, those ant-acids or proton pump inhibitors you’re popping may be masking the symptoms by making the problem worse. You see, many acid reflux issues are caused by too little stomach acidity rather than too much. If you have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s, crohns, or IBS, your likelihood of having low stomach acid is especially high and taking a medication to further reduce or block this acidity will only result in a deeper detriment to your bodies ability to digest and extract important nutrients from the food you eat. Hair-loss in women, vitamin B12 deficiency, weak peeling fingernails, and chronic constipation are just a few of the symptoms seen in people with low stomach acidity as they are unable to extract vital vitamins and minerals from their food. Heartburn medications only exacerbate the issue while muffling the symptoms.

Test Your Stomach Acidity

If you suspect low stomach acid, there is a simple and relatively accurate way to test your acidity levels. For a more accurate read, take this test for three days straight to get your average.

  1. upon waking, add 1/4 tsp baking soda to 4-6 ounces of cold water

  2. drink the mixture on an empty stomach and time how long it takes you to burp for up to 5 minutes

If your stomach is producing an adequate amount of acid, you’ll probably belch within 2-3 minutes. However, if it takes longer than three minutes, you likely have low stomach acid. If this is the case, we can have you do a simple betaine HCL test at home to confirm your low stomach acidity.

I first experienced anxiety while pregnant with my second daughter when 20 minutes of Cormac Mcarthy’s post apocalyptic movie version of “The Road” threw me into a month long panic attack.  20 minutes of a movie was all it took to trigger my prenatal hormone frazzled amygdala into full blown cortisol driven alarm mode. This Anxiety ruined any semblance of sleep I was able to catch with a 2 year old in the house and sent me on a high tech home security search that became an obsession. As if the only thing standing between my family and a post-apocalyptic mob of cannibalists was an alarm system.  I knew I was being ridiculous, but my nervous system was beyond reason. Fortunately my initial glimpse into the discomfort of anxiety was short lived as a few weeks of hormone regulating Acupuncture (and perhaps a few glasses of wine) was all it took for me to get back my calm. For many though, Anxiety is a constant and relentless companion and something which I treat every day at Durango Acupuncture Clinic.


Introducing the Amygdala and Hippocampus and their role in Anxiety


The amygdala is like a family dog who spends his days in a kind of obsessive vigilance at the window just waiting to alert you and your brain to the presence of impending doom and danger, usually in the form of a UPS man.  This normally serves to keep us out of harm's way, but hormonal fluctuations, extreme trauma and stress can throw our amygdala’s off, resulting in everything suddenly becoming a major threat.


The hippocampus is a lot like your mother, in that it takes certain scary or threatening events (like that time you thought it would be fun to ride your bike with no hands and ended up in a cast for the summer) and never, ever lets you forget about them.  The hippocampus stores these frightening events in fragmented flashbacks in the brain to remind you to stay away from dangers in the future, but when your brain is imbalanced by severe trauma, these memories can lead to PTSD.


These two parts of the brain can act like sugar crazed kids at a slumber party who just had a seance and are freaking out!  They can trigger the increase of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine (which increases heart rate and blood pressure) and dopamine (which can increase feelings of dread) and decrease GABA and 5HTP, your body's go-to transmitters for inducing a state of calm and happiness.    


These brain centers and neurotransmitters are designed to make us safe and keep us out of harm's way, but when stress, trauma, thyroid issues, or hormone fluctuations come into play, they can lead to neurological imbalances and anxiety disorders.  


Fortunately, there are effective ways to reduce anxiety:


  1. Get  Acupuncture: which has been shown in studies to reduce anxiety by altering the functional release of neurotransmitters to stop the autonomic response.  Which is like giving your amygdala a bone to gnaw on and your worried mother-like hippocampus a cocktail. It can also affect the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems by reducing cortisol and adrenaline and increasing serotonin levels.  There's a reason why you always seem to float out the Acupuncture room.   3. Stomach Acid Gets a Bad Wrap…

Gas, bloating, belching, acid reflux, indigestion, they’re all symptoms most of us have encountered after a particularly large meal or party, many of us experience this kind of discomfort on a daily basis and we blame it on the belief that our stomachs are producing too much acid and take medications to suppress this acidity.  But it turns out that stomach acid is your friend and we’ve vilified the very thing that can solve our gastric woes. As it turns out, roughly 90% of GERD and Acid reflux cases are caused by insufficient stomach acid, rather than too much and there are over 16,000 medical articles and studies to support this theory. Pharma has made a lot of money off of the vilification of stomach acid, and I’m about to throw a little shade on the subject.  


You see, stomach acid is your friend, only more awesome…

Stomach acid:

  • Sterilizes your food: protecting you from gross bacteria like H. Pylori

  • Digests proteins

  • Activates pepsin; to help you break down nutrients

  • Activates intrinsic factor: for all those folks who like their vitamin B12 to be absorbed

  • Stimulates bile and enzyme delivery

  • Closes the esophageal sphincter:  that’s right, hypo-acidity can actually result in the sphincter staying open and creating acid reflux!  (I know, I said sphincter twice, stop giggling).


It would be pretty weird if your friend digested your food for you, but for your stomach it's no big deal.  Stomach acid is your hero and low stomach acid = poor digestion which leads to poor absorption and assimilation of all our favorite vitamins including: B12, Iron, folate, vitamin A and zinc which can lead to a cascade of other issues including B12 deficiency, low energy, leaky gut and autoimmune disease.  Yikes!

Not cool! … proton pump inhibitors are like the mean girl in the school lunchroom, sure she’s nice and soothing at first, but the moment you’ve gone to the bathroom she’s eaten all your cookies and is talking smack about you to the kids at the next table.  Which is to say that PPIs suppress stomach acid, allowing the bad bacteria H. Pilori to flourish and go wild like a pack of middle schoolers at a Taylor Swift concert. H. Pilori inhibits the digestion of proteins, sending the raw material into the small intestine where bad bacteria feed on your food via fermentation, causing uncomfortable gas and bloating and a super fun case of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Additionally, this reduced stomach acid results in the body’s inability to absorb nutrients and you end up with the painfully long and desperate list of symptoms above.


And your body becomes dependent on PPI’s

Because PPI’s are constantly making the problem worse while masking the symptoms, they are a pharmaceutical company’s dream because getting off a proton pump inhibitor is like trying to walk on a floor full of legos in the dark.


So what’s a person with tummy troubles to do?


First off, just say NO!

To Proton pump inhibitors, avoid them like you avoid those Boy Scouts selling $20 bags of popcorn at the entrance to city market.


But if you’re already on one, wean off slowly!

Dr. Mercola gives great advice on the importance of weaning off this medication slowly and carefully by using over the counter medications like Tagamet or Zantac over the course of a few weeks while also following the dietary suggestions below while maintaining communication with your doctor as well as your acupuncturist or naturopath.

13 steps to woo stomach acid back into your life:

  1. Cut back on or altogether stop the ingestion of: Nicotine, alcohol, gluten and caffeine.  (I just lost you, didn’t I?)

  2. Incorporate an easy to digest liquid diet when you’re on the go via smoothies, bone broth and collagen rich protein shakes.  Like Dr. Axe brand

  3. Get acupuncture to enhance the digestive system, boost energy, enhance immunity and reduce stress. There are several Chinese herbal formulas to enhance energy and digestion as well.  

  4. Take a high quality digestive enzyme with meals (I’ve got an amazing one in my office).

  5. Replace processed salt with pink Himalayan sea salt, as this is a building block for creating Hydrochloric acid which is vital for protein digestion.

  6. Consider supplementing with betaine HCL for added help with digesting proteins see me for details on how to safely do this.

  7. Use ginger; nibble on a root, add fresh or dried to foods or eat fermented.

  8. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate between meals, avoid water like you’ve got rabies for a half hour before or after eating.

  9. Add lemon and apple cider vinegar to your water and drink aloe Vera.

  10. Eat and drink plenty of fermented foods like coconut Kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, Kimchi and any kind of fermented veggie.

  11. Consider taking carminatives like DGL licorice (I’ve got this in my office)

  12. Eat your protein first when your acid is most plentiful

  13. Relax,  eat slowly, chew thoroughly and eat big meals when you are not stressed.  


While this seems like a lot, before you know it, you and your stomach acid will be bff’s forever again and you won’t need to rely on HCL supplementation any more.

What is Cupping?


Chances are that if you've had a treatment with me at Durango Acupuncture Clinic, you're familiar with the warm massage-like suction sensation of cupping.  I use a technique known in Chinese Medicine as fire cupping, where fire is introduced into a glass cup to create a vacuum which is then suctioned to oiled skin.  The cups are then moved along the meridian or myofascial pathways to increase circulation.  Don't worry, I rarely produce anything close to the large bruises you see on the Olympians as I use a very gentle technique.

Headaches and Migraines

Head, shoulders, neck and Jaw, neck and Jaw…

When it's literally all in your head in Durango,

 Pain can be a very solitary experience.  Migraines show no physical evidence and the depth of their severity is often impossible to convey to co-workers, friends and family.  As the daughter of a chronic migraine sufferer, I learned to walk silently, speak softly, keep the lights down low and the music off.  Migraine medications do little to prevent and often leave you feeling drugged and dopey.

Acupuncture For Labor induction and more.

My intro to Acupuncture for labor induction began in the spare room of my little adobe casita in Canoncito, Santa Fe, NM on September 19th 2004.  I remember the exact date because it was the day before my first daughter; Willow was born. A year into my Masters program in Acupuncture school,  I was both the patient and the Acupuncturist and this initial foray into Acupuncture induction was a complete success!

This success soon led to a cascade of induction requests from my many pregnant friends and evolved into what would later become my specialty after graduating from school 3 years later.  Whole Women Health, my first practice was born and I began working closely with several of the town’s most trusted midwives, offering my services to their pre and post partum clients.  Traveling throughout Santa Fe and the neighboring pueblos, I’d administer Acupuncture inductions or help to turn breech babies in people’s living rooms and attend the occasional homebirth to help with a stalled out labor or pain management.  Eventually, the local OB’s caught wind of these treatments and began referring their mom’s to be into my care and I began making hospital calls to the maternity ward as well. 14 years later, I’m grateful for the many open-minded and caring OB’s, nurse and lay midwives in Durango for continually entrusting me with the care of their clients and love this aspect of my practice.

There are times, it seems, that you can’t go on a raft trip in Durango without half of the women on your trip having Hashimotos.  No seriously, our raft trip of 26 people last summer included 5 women with hashi’s and that number was low because most of the folks on the trip were either under 12 or male.  Had we organized a trip of 26 women aged 30-50 our thyroiditis numbers would have been astronomical. I say we because I’m a member of the unofficial Durango Hashimotos club as well.  Before we dive into the how’s and what’s of this issue, I’ll take a moment to introduce you to:

Just to name a few…

Hashi-what?

Hashimotos is an autoimmune disease which is usually born from the hot and steamy love triangle of leaky gut (digestive and dietary issues), major hormonal shifts (think pregnancy and menopause) and adrenal fatigue (stress in a nutshell).  These immune, adrenal and hormonal stressors trigger thyroid antibodies to go all Rambo and attack your thyroid (among other organs), resulting in the lovely list of symptoms above as a result of low Thyroid stimulating hormone. Genetics can also play a big role into our susceptibility.  In my family, we share autoimmune disease like some families pass on good china or silver, it’s truly the gift that keeps on giving!

And why can’t we just pop a pill and forget about it?

  1. Chill the heck out! Stress and adrenal taxation are recipes for autoimmune issues (among most other diseases).  Delegate, meditate, practice yoga (my class is at 4:30 on Tuesday’s, just say’in), play with your kids, let the laundry pile up, soak in a hot spring, ride your bike (shut the Strava off), laugh, walk your dog, take a moment to be present.

  1. Heal your gut. Ditch the bread to start, (I know, I know, you hate me already but...) gluten has been shown in studies to have the effect of canned spinach on your Popeyed antibodies, enhancing their thyroid bashing abilities. Seal your gut lining with collagen rich bone broth or bone broth powders.  Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi or kombucha to help repopulate the gut with good bacteria.

Sciatica, it’s more than just a pain in the butt in Durango and Acupuncture can help.

While it’s physical manifestations may be confined to the buttocks or leg on one side, Sciatica, piriformis syndrome and herniated disks can create some serious limitations when it comes to doing the activities you love.  When an injury or condition keeps you off your bike, out of the gym, away from your yoga, running or hiking practice, the emotional pain of vulnerability and depression can be far worse than the original issue. Here are some of the common complaints I hear from my sciatic patients at Durango Acupuncture Clinic.

  1. Pain in the butt that is worse with sitting, hello desk job!

  2. Numbness or burning pain that radiates down the leg.

  3. Pain worsened by exercise, and generally everything fun.

Causes:

Structural impingement or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs through the buttocks and branches down the leg to the calf and toes is the underlying culprit.  While those with ultra tight hamstrings and back myofascial lines like couch potato’s, desk jockeys, car commuters and gym junkies compose the majority of the afflicted, yoginis aren’t in the clear either.  Hyperflexibility is often a liability when it comes to the health of your joints, fascia and tendons, landing a number of cirque de soleil style yogis in my office with butt pain in Durango.

Why Acupuncture is the bomb when it comes to pain relief

It stimulates the nervous system which then tells the brain to:

  1. Increase blood flow to the area of pain.

  2. Reduce inflammation and reduce muscle contraction.

How I treat sciatica:  After a thorough intake where I gather as much information about you, your symptoms, and their physical and emotional impact on your life, I’ll check your pulse and tongue and begin to make a  Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

You’ll be invited to undress and slip under the warmed flannel sheets and blankets of my treatment table.  Using oil massage techniques, I’ll begin to examine your back, detecting adhesions and trigger points along the length of the back and glutes.  Once I find these active points, tiny needles are painlessly inserted. While your needles do their thing, you’ll be coaxed into deep relaxation through a short guided meditation after which you’ll be left for a few minutes of nap time with soothing music in the background.

These treatments also involve one or more adjunct therapies, including cupping, essential oils, moxibusition (heat therapy), myofascial release techniques, e-stim, guasha ( a deep tissue form of body work) or homeopathic traumeel injections.  Traumeel injections are an effective, safe, natural and practically painless alternative to steroid injections and can be added to your treatment for a small additional fee.

I like to get you back on your bike, hiking trails or couch as quickly as possible.  Often this requires twice weekly treatments for the first week or two. In this way, we’re able to ride the wave of progress we create together.  Notice that I say we, because you’ll be expected to take an active role in your healing, I may recommend specific therapeutic yoga poses, exercises, supplements, foods or rest to ensure that you get the most efficient and dramatic results possible.  Most patients experience significant results in these first few weeks and then gradually reduce their visits until they no longer need help or just come in occasionally for maintenance.
